Pacemaker's Bike

We forgot to post this picture earlier in the month. Just a sneaky shot of the pacer's bike at Nara Keirin. Nice to see he is using a local frame builder too, namely the legendary Nara builder Iribe...

And here it is in action...

(Cyclo) Cross Stitch

Spotted by our good buddy Brad whilst out in Kyoto last weekend this "custom" Kon's Cycle cruiser in the window of what we guess to be some kind of haberdashery shop...

It kind of goes well with this similar bike that Brad spotted in a local shop here in Nara last year...

This season everyone will be rocking the woolen look, just take our word for it and get knitting!

Casualties (Local Edition)

We passed these three sad looking cases right on our doorstep here in Nara tucked away behind a newly built apartment block...

The devil in the details...

The touring machine that carries you ahead of it's time...

Rust. Never. Sleeps.

Local Shots

A few shots taken around Nara over the weekend during some local rides...

Kofuku-ji in the distance.
Rear shot of Todai-ji
Lovely clear roads to ride!

And while just riding through our local neighbourhood on a quiet Sunday afternoon we happened to find...

The cat bus from Totoro!
One of the many shrines at Todai-ji
Resting up above Nara Koen
The belfry at Todai-ji
A beautiful sunset behind Todai-ji today...

Not forgetting the now traditional shika shot...

And we leave you with our neighbour Totoro...

Equinox Ride

After two days of rain, wind and hail here in Nara the sun broke through the clouds just before sunset today giving us a chance to jump on the bike and take a spin over to the Heijo palace...

Clouds clearing over Mount Ikoma.
On the way to the palace we cycled by the Sahogawa river where local schoolkids have decorated lanterns that have been hung along the river to mark the spring equinox...

Over at the palace a welcome bit of evening sunshine was warming us up and drying out the ground...

...And there were a few signs of early cherry blossom on the trees...

Hopefully the weekend will bring us some better weather and we can get out on a longer ride!

Il Pirata

The late, great Marco Pantani remembered in the current issue of Ciclissimo magazine...

"He got people hooked on the sport. There may be riders who have achieved more than him, but they never succeeded in drawing in the fans like he did" ~ Miguel Indurain.

Custom Vigore MTB

Spotted last week in Kyoto outside the Silbest Cycle shop, this rather lovely, bright pink Vigore custom MTB bike...

Vigore MTB
Seeing this just adds to our list of bikes that we want! We paid a visit to the Vigore shop in Kyoto last summer, you can read all about that here.

Nara Keirin Men's Race

We nearly forgot to post the shots we took of the men's racing over at Nara Keirin last Monday, no real story to tell, just an ordinary day at the track. Here are the pictures...

Lined up for action...

Taking positions...
The pacemaker in purple leading the riders out...
Pacemaker on a Panasonic...
Pacemaker drops out (top left of photo)...
And the sprinting begins..
Yellow, number 5 wins...
The winner!

And a few pictures we took of the riders warming up for the next race using the miniature setting on our camera...
